The one time I'll blog about Michael Jackson

Trust me, it'll be brief.

Michael Jackson is dead. It's been on the news for days. That's it. Dead guy. OVER.

I don't want to see any more news about Michael Jackson UNLESS it involves his re-animated corpse re-doing Thriller. This is the lone exception.

I wouldn't mind hearing more/reading more about the beer expert Michael Jackson, however. That guy was a badass...

He's also dead.

Blog over.

Remembering David Foster Wallace: A Poor Yorick Production

I heard the news late Saturday night, and I could not believe it. David Foster Wallace, dead, by his own hand at the age of 46. A giant in his field, a man with infinite talent, and a tragic loss.

You may be wondering who this David Foster Wallace character is, and why he feels the need to include his middle name. I can't help out on the second question, but the answer to the first is that he was probably the pre-eminent writer of this generation, and it's a damn shame more people didn't realize that. The man was so good that Joe and Zhuangy were both familiar with his style and wit from the random anecdotes that I'd mention from his writing. In fact, when I passed along the news to Joe, he became exasperated and said goddammit, why is everybody good dying this year. And I had no answer for him, though God did--Rick Wright of Pink Floyd would die two days later.

Why do I care so much about the death of this writer? I mean, I had only read one book of his, and bits and pieces of his various essays. But when that book is Infinite Jest, it shouldn't really count as one book--it's drama, comedy, tragedy, drug trip, catharsis, and spiritual awakening that is all crammed together in a post-modern near-future dystopian mess that perfectly captures the spirit of this past decade, all in a tidy 1079 pages. It's incisive and cutting, and introspective and touching, anything and everything. At this point, I'm pretty sure the meaning of life is hidden within those pages. It is the kind of book that doesn't give you any idea as to the context of the story or why anything would take place in the Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment until you're 350 pages into it, and that's just fine.

Actually, when I said I only read one book, it was a half-truth. I was about a hundred pages away from the finish when I heard the news. The only appropriate response I could think to make was to dive in and close it out. So I stayed up late last night, hours later than a guy who needs to catch up on sleep before law classes hit him in the ass for the rest of the week should, and completed the work. And upon completion, I realized I wasn't done, and I was slightly angry. I then went back and started the book again, as I realized that the book really did live up to its title, and upon reaching the scene where Hal and Don G. recreate the digging up of Yorick did I achieve a small sense of resolution.

I then spent the rest of today pondering the various lessons of DFW. With the benefit of hindsight, one can see how large a role suicide and depression played in a generally comic novel and how awful the foreshadowing proved to be. I remembered the passages that dealt with the intense psychic pain of depression, and realized that this wasn't the word of a clinician, this was the confession of a survivor. I tried to piece together the themes of alienation, of politics, of entertainment to the world at large. I remembered the dissection that DFW made of the inherent potential psychological ramifications of the introduction of videophones, and how over ten pages he savagely painted a picture of our vanities and worst qualities, but in an absolutely hilarious light. And that was the true essence of DFW.

It's hard to capture the craftsmanship on display in his work. I believe it's more subtle than not. I found myself going on for pages and then pausing to regroup and realize good god, that was a brilliant passage. It was a genius that didn't often shove itself in your face, but revealed itself over time. And it's a damn shame he isn't around to share it any more--and why the fact that it took CNN until late today to put up a story about him all the more infuriating.

If you're not ready to tackle Infinite Jest, there are plenty of examples of DFW's essays all over the net, and I'll be posting links to them soon. I just hope that as a result of this unfortunate event that at least he'll gain some new fans.

Bringing A Smile to Any Dead Kennedys Fan

Sometimes CNN justifies its existence. Other times, not so much. But when it comes to bringing up the most random retarded stories, it has no equal.

I bring you the tale of a Milwaukee gentleman and his lawnmower. Well, the gentleman, his lawnmower, and a dangerous firearm. Surprisingly, these elements were all found in conjunction and aided by the effects of alcohol. [Shocked face]

And if you're wondering why the hell we're referencing the Dead Kennedys, then just find yourself a copy of Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death and enjoy such kickass tunes as this one.

Oregon Matters!

The one (and only) benefit to the drawn-out Democratic Primary campaign has been the attention paid to some, ahem, lesser states. And Oregon certainly fits that bill. It's about time that people learn the finer points of...timber payments? And have the media visit such illustrious locales as...Albany. And Pendelton. Because THIS is America, fuck yeah.

At least we had a brief bit of national attention to our quirky little state. Granted, most of this occurred around 11 p.m. Eastern Time, but at least we got all the insomniacs on the up and up about the O-Regon. Everyone had a crash course in the total awesomeness that is the vote-by-mail system that we have in place; words like "sophisticated" and "efficient" were thrown around, especially as we had 50% of the vote counted within an hour, the kind of terms not usually associated with Oregonians. And we also had the great delight to hear CNN's John King refer to Salem as a "college town". Of course, people that are familiar with the area would probably call it a town full of old people and meth heads, but who's to quibble?

We also learned that even though Oregon is waaaaaaaay white, we are apparently "affluent" and "educated". This would be news to 97% of Oregonians, but then again, when you're competing against Kentucky, it's hard NOT to look impressive. And the fact that most rural, white, hard-working Oregonians voted for Mr. Obama means absolutely nothing, because Kentucky went so hard the other way.

That's the story of Oregon: Always overshadowed by Kentucky. Damn you, Colonel, and your delicious herbs and spices!

No Talent Ass-Clowns United in Marriage!

Good God, WHY?!

Yes, I saw this up on CNN today. Most times I really don't give a shit about celebrity weddings, celebrity gossip, etc. But this one really snagged me because it was so fucking aggravating.

Why is it that these people get to be rich? It's not like ONE of them has talent and the other doesn't. Neither of them have talent! Pete Wentz won't even try to play a decent sounding bass. He's rich as fuck and he won't even take that TINY FUCKING STEP. None of these people deserve what they have. They are a drain on society.

Not that this is anything new, really, but it doesn't make it any less aggravating. Especially when you musicians like Dan Schmid (bassist for the Cherry Poppin' Daddies) who have to make their living selling me tater-tots and beer. The roles should really be reversed here, but they aren't. Seriously, tip the man.

But I guess there is a bright side here: Stupidity is together with stupidity and thus more likely to get itself killed in some freakishly stupid way. God help us if they reproduce...

You people voted for Hubert Humphrey, and you killed Jesus!

OK, not exactly...

I really had no choice but to click a link titled "Feds: Teen wants to die, go to heaven, kill Jesus."

Frankly, I find the whole thing baffling. Kill Jesus? In Heaven? Now, I'm not expert when it comes to Christianity, but I'm pretty sure you can't kill people in Heaven because they're already dead. Furthermore, if you DID kill someone in Heaven, where would they go? Detroit? I think not.

Obviously this kid is a little more than off his rocker, if you know what I mean. (I am only vaguely aware of what that means.) Still, I'm not sure that life imprisonment is really the answer. Perhaps he should be sent to high security mental hospital, but a life sentence? I don't really see how that option is helpful.

Anyway, off to greater and more important things in the news. Like, uh, some bear, aptly called "Sleepy Bear," can't seem to stay awake. This is totally newsworthy.

CNN, you never fail to fail. I mean ... amaze me.
